Sevilla vs PSV Eindhoven Match Preview
Sevilla have a proud history in this competition, having won it six times since 2006. This is a record. However, this season they started their European adventure in the Champions League. They won just one match in Group G as they finished with five points, below Man City and Dortmund but above Copenhagen. Finishing in third place transferred them to their favourite competition, where they will have designs on going all the way for a seventh time.
Having struggled domestically this season, Jorge Sampaoli’s men have started to pick up some form. Sevilla have won four of the last six games, putting them third in the form table across this period. They come into this game having won 2-0 at home against Mallorca at the weekend. They currently sit in 12th, eight points off 7th, but also precariously just four points above the relegation zone. Continual improvement is required to ensure their safety and a comfortable finish in La Liga.
PSV qualified for the play-off round well, finishing second to Arsenal in Group A. The highlight of their six games was, without a doubt, the 2-0 win in Eindhoven in the fifth match against the Gunners. There was also a marvellous 5-1 win away in Zurich. Finishing with 13 points and an impressive 15 goals scored, they were entertaining throughout the section.
Domestically, things are going okay for PSV. They have only picked up 12 points in their last seven games. They sit in fourth place with 42 points, four from Feyenoord in first. Crucially, only six points separate the top five, so it is a tight league this season. They beat Groningen 6-0 at the weekend, and coach Ruud van Nistelrooy will hope that they can build on this result. The club lost Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke to Liverpool and Chelsea, respectively, in the January transfer window. However, they will still hope to progress from this tie.

Sevilla vs PSV Eindhoven Lineups (Predicted)
Sevilla: (3-4-3): Bono; Nianzou, Gudelj, Bade; Gil, Rakitic, Fernando, Navas; Torres, En-Nesyri, Suso
PSV (4-2-3-1): Benitez; van Aanholt, Branthwaite, Ramalho, Teze; Sangare, Veerman; Hazard, Xavi Simons, Bakayoko; De Jong
Our Prediction
Sevilla are strong at home right now, having won their last four at the Sanchez-Pizjuan in the league and only conceding one goal. The stadium has been a fortress in recent weeks. They have goals in their team, with the technically gifted Torres and Suso buzzing around the lethal En-Nesyri up front. In midfield, they like to build and pass the ball around. We see Rakitic and Fernando playing in the middle, but whoever plays will likely give Sevilla the platform to have a superior share of the possession. Their three-at-the-back system is interesting as it may close off spaces for the PSV wingers down the channels.
Gil (or Acuna) and Navas are excellent at providing the width for Sevilla and crossing the ball for En-Nesyri to attack. Crosses could be a good way for them to score, in addition to their cute little passes in and around the box. PSV have their own threat, however. T Hazard, Xavi Simons, and Bakayoko are all tricky customers and good dribblers and passers. They are creative players, Hazard and Bakayoko having been charged with replacing Gakpo and Madueke. They will look to connect and interchange while supporting De Jong up front. Like En-Nesyri, De Jong is a target man and can attack crosses coming in from the wings if PSV can find the gaps down the sides.
This game will be tight, as will the tie in general. Sevilla look good right now and have been strong defensively, but we see little in this tie as PSV can be good on their day too. Both teams might score, but Sevilla may earn a narrow win to take to Eindhoven next week.
